Fight Club: Trailer Analysis

This post is my following trailer analysis of the Thriller film: Fight Club. Directed by David Fincher and released in the year 1999. This is a perfect example of a psychological thriller trailer as the story itself is centered more on the characters instead of the plot.

Clips: The clips used are presented in a quick pace, they flow from one another in an episodic pattern, as if the order they are in can already tell the story. The flow also give it a sense of a chase happening, with the characters either trying to escape or find each other. This adds energy to the trailer as it intrigues us to carry on watching and find out more.

The colour grade of the clips are dark and of a gloomy atmosphere, but most clips used are set a night to add to the suspense of the thriller. It also makes the secrecy of the story more relevant. The clips are theatrical and out there, they boost the energy even further as the action is always in the audiences eye.

The dialogue of the trailer comes from the clips used, with several flowing from scene to scene. It is as if one of the characters is telling the story the audience, but leaving it all on a cliffhanger and the only way to find out the rest is by watching the film at the cinema. It emphasizes the power of the trailer as all of it is presented as one big game in which we have decided to play.

Text: It is used at the beginning to introduce the trailer (without the title been given away till the end). The main use of text is to introduce the director of the film, it doesn't give away a name just a previous accolade of what the person as done, the film they used was one of his most successful so it familerises us with the person and we know what this person can do the create an interesting film.

The background the text is placed on is glowing, with several images of it going through arteries in the body (again another link to the plot), it shows the growing strength of the body and impact it does, it also impacts on the view of the text.

The actors/actresses names also glow (in the same background), the cast names are well known and adding them to the trailer adds an promotional boost.

Music score: The music sounds technical (Dub-step), it makes the clips overly emphasized and adds a sudden rush of energy, it makes the viewing experience more exciting and we want to be more in the action.

The company name logos at the beginning - 20th century fox/Regency. They are joined together in a quick fade in-out transition, they don't take to long to be presented as the companies are well known already.

The title of the film is marked down on soap - the main significant prop of the film (story-line). The colour of the soap is pink, this is a big contrast to the rest of the trailer.
